PET411CARE Basic Dog Care
Love your dogs with proper care.

A dog is a long time comment. It is very important to take real good care of your dog. Dogs live from 10 to 20 years, maybe more. The other word for dog is canine. A male is called a stud; a female is called a bitch. A baby dog in a pup or puppy.

Always remember that your veterinarian is your best source of information on your animal’s health care.

PICKING THE RIGHT KIND OF DOG
There are so many different breeds of dogs in the world and they all have different needs. It’s so important to research the different breeds even if you’re getting a mutt. A mutt could have rott, lab, or poodle; so then have a trait from one of the breeds of dogs. When you research the different breeds think about your life style and find a breed that fits that life style.

All dogs need their daily walks but some breeds need longer walks or a real good run. For example, the working breeds need a lot of exercise. I mean one to two hour walks a day, this is so important because a bored dog is a dog that gets into trouble like barking, digging, or running off.

So if you are not an active person a working breed will only bring you stress and head aches.
There are books and websites that can help you in your research on any breed of dog.
There are breeders that you can get your dog from. But there are so many dogs in the pound or no-kill shelter, please safe a dog.

FOOD AND WATER:

Dogs need proper food and fresh water daily.

Your dog will need fresh clean water everyday. It is also very important to wash the water bowl out because bacteria and algae can grow in a water bowl. Bacteria and algae can lead to health problems which can lead to a huge medical bill. Just by taking the time and providing your dog with a clean bowl of fresh water you will help keep him or her healthy. Water is the most important thing in any animal’s life.

Food on the other hand depends on what type of dog you have. You do feed all dogs twice a day, but as for what you feed them and how much you feed them depends on the breed of dog you have. Please talk to your veterinarian about nutrition your breed of dog will need. A small dog has different nutritional needs from a big dog. A lot of dog food companies understand and are now make different types of dog food for the many different breeds.

Supplements are a very big help when it comes to your dog’s health. This is also a subject to talk to your veterinarian about.

Bones and dog biscuits keep your dogs teeth strong and clean whether they are small or big.

Pieces of meat make a great treat, but don’t over feed you dog.

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG:
Moldy or spoiled food
Chocolate
Coffee
Grapes & raisins
Onions, garlic
Yeast dough
*Dogs can not have cat food it’s like giving them candy.*
Chicken bones
Don’t give your dog chicken bones, they have been known to splinter and cut the insides of your dog. If your dog got his or her teeth onto a chicken bone don’t panic, just keep a close eye on your dog. If you start to notice your dog having any problem, or doesn't seem to be feeling well get your dog to the vets. You can call your veterinarian to tell them about the chicken bones, and what signs you should look for. Not all dogs have a problem with chicken bone but most do. It is best to not let your dog get a chicken bone.

BEDDING AND HOUSING

First we will talk about an indoor dog. The dog will need a bed; you can get a doggie bed or a nice box with a blanket or a towel. Dogs need a warm place to sleep. Dogs might have fur but that does not mean they don’t get cold. If you have a backyard I suggest a doggie door. Don’t have a doggie door then you will need to let your dog outside every hour or every two hours.

Now if your dog is going to be outside then it’s very important to have a weather proof dog house with a blanket or a towel. Make sure the door of the dog house as a flap on it to keep the wind out. If you have a puppy keep it in the house till it is full grown.

Now you will need to go over every inch of your fence if you have a backyard. Dogs are real good at finding ways out of a fence. There are some dogs that will climb the fence. Now if you don’t have a fence please build one, other then that get a runner line if your dog needs to be tied up.
I really don’t believe in keeping a dog tied up, but if you walk the dogs every day it will work. Make sure that the line is long enough that your dog can reach water, food, and shelter. Make sure there are no obstacles around that your dog can get their rope or line tangled around. A tangled rope or line will prevent your dog from reaching his or her food, water and shelter. Dogs have been known to choke themselves when their ropes get tangled. This is why it’s better to just build a fence.

How you keep your dog depends on your lifestyle, just make sure he or she has a very warm place to sleep and access to food and water at all times.

You must also make sure the dog’s space is kept clean all the time, or they can become sick. Plus who wants to step in dog poo?

Wash their bedding every week. Clean up after them every other day or every third day. Cleaning up after every day is the best. If you live in an apartment and your dog is paper trained then you will need to clean up after them everyday. If you keep your dog in a small pin then you will need to clean up after them everyday.

VETERINARIAN, VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH:

One of the first things you should do when you first get a dog is set a veterinarian appointment and have the dog receive a complete check-up.
Things to talk about:
• First about the breed, each breed of dogs has health problems because of years of breeding. Example, there are some small dogs that have sinus problems because their noses are very stout.
• Talk to your veterinarian about nutrition.
• Have the veterinarian show you how to clean the dogs ears and cut their nails. Plus you can ask about cleaning the dogs teeth
• Now for the most important thing that needs to be done, Vaccinations. Dog must have their vaccinations to help them from deceases. There are a variety of shots it is important to talk to your veterinarian about them. Example, ask your vet about parvo and distemper. It is a law to have your dog receives his or her yearly shots.
• Talk to your veterinarian about your concerns, like if the new dog you got has diarrhea. Diarrhea is not a good sign.
• Spay and neuter your dog. Most dogs are put to death just because they do not have a home. How would you feel if someone killed you just because you were homeless? Think about it. The dog population is just too high. There are not enough homes out there for them all. Please no more puppies.
• You can also get your ID tags at the veterinarian office. ID tags help you get your dog back if he or she gets lost or runs away. Plus in some towns if your dog is not tag you could get fined. So for your peace of mind, get the tags. Licensing your dog is not a joke.
• Ask the veterinarian about regular check-ups and when to have them. Like I said each breed is so different that some need more check-ups then others.

If your pet is showing any signs of distress or you suspect your pet is seriously ill, CONTACT YOUR VETERINARIAN immediately.

BATHING AND GROOMING:

Grooming is done on a regular base; long haired dogs should be done daily. Brushing your dogs will help in keeping him or her clean. It is very important for long haired dogs to be brush because knots can cause them a lot of pain. So if you do not wish to be brushing your dog daily don’t get a long haired dog or find a groomer.

Brush your dog’s teeth everyday to prevent teeth decay. Dogs do get tarter buildup and cavities. When you take your dog into the veterinarian for a check-up, have them examine his or her teeth. You can even have the vet give your dog’s teeth a good cleaning.

Trimming nails is another thing that must be done. You can have a veterinarian or a groomer do the dogs nail. If you want to do the nails yourself you will need a nail cutter or some people use a dremel tool which you can find in pet stores. Please have a veterinarian or groom show you the proper way to cut a dogs nails. The big tip is walking your dog on a paved road or sidewalk. This helps with keeping their nails filed down so you don’t have to cut them so much.

Bath time could be hard the first few times because dogs can be fearful of the tub and water. Dogs have great hearing which with the water running in the tub can be very loud for them. Getting in the tub with your dog can help. Make sure you do not get water in their ears or soap in their eyes. The water should be room temp. Only use tick flea shampoo if they have ticks or fleas. Sometime these shampoos can cause irradiation with the dog’s skins. You only wash your dog every three weeks, if they have ticks and fleas or if they are very dirty.

Ears on a dog need to be cleaned so that they don’t get infections. This you really need to ask a veterinarian about, because some ear cleaning solutions are not good to use in a dogs ear. But the ears do need to be cleaned.

NEUTRING AND SPAYEDING:

Yes I will say it again get your dogs fixed please. Save a dog.

Most dogs get put to death because a home can not be found for them. The only way to stop this from happening is to have your dog spayed or neutered. The overpopulation is a very big problem.

Please neuter your male dogs, a lot of people feel that because their dog is male they don’t need to bother with getting him fixed. But here is something to think about. Male dogs love to mark and they will mark your home. Your male dog is less likely to mark if he is neutered.

Don’t be apart of the problem.

PLAYTIME AND TOYS:

Yes you need to get your dog toys and bones; these two things can help both in cleaning the dog’s teeth and keep them mentally health. Plus it will keep them from chewing on your things like shoes.

Please do your research on the right toys for your breed of dog. Different breed will have different need when it comes to toys. Example big dog should not have small dog toys because he or she might choke on the toy. Plus dogs have there own personality so there will be some toys they like and some they just won’t care about.

Playing with your dog builds a bond between you and your dog so set up play time everyday. Plus play time will help give your dog a good workout which keeps him or her physically healthy.

Playing helps so much with stress. So if you have had a bad day play with your dog even if you’re not in the mood. After a little while of playing you will start feeling the stress leave your body and your mind start to become clearer. This will help with your health. Playing rules…

TRAINING:

Your dog must be trained for safety reasons. If your dog is not train then your dog or another person will get hurt. Dog bites happen because of poor or lacking in training. I will say it again; if you don’t train your dog the dog or a person will get hurt. This is a life or death issue.

Dogs are pack animals so you need to learn how to be a pack leader. When training your dog it is letting your dog know you’re the pack leader, plus the training teaches you how to become a leader.

A leash is used in training your dog even in the house. So get a great leash or two.
You can use treats to train your dog but use very few because an obese dog is an unhealthy dog. So try giving your dog his or her favorite toy as a reward, a good scratch behind the ears goes a long way.

There are some real great doggie schools, training books, and shows about dog training. Maybe you know someone who’s great with dogs, talk to them. There are so many ways to train a dog so try them all.
Even if you get a dog that is already trained he can turn into a problem if you don’t know how to handle a dog.
A trained dog is a problem free dog.
The training does not happen overnight it takes time.

Don’t ever hit your dog. Learn to be patient with your dog.

CLOTHS FOR DOGS:

Most dogs don’t need cloths it’s just something fun for the owner, but there are some breed of dogs that don’t have an undercoat. If the breed of dog you have does not have an under coat please buy them an out-fit for bad weather.
Just like humans dogs can get hypothermia. In the wild dogs would go find a nice warm den to get out of the bad weather, but dogs depend on us to provide them with warmth.
So cloths are important to certain breeds of dogs, but clothing is still the owner’s choice.

Here are two great shops to check out.

DANGER

Don’t put your dog in the back of a truck. Lots of dogs get hurt or kill from falling out of the back of a truck. I don’t care what the reason is. It is dangerous.

Don’t get a dog just because you think it will be cool. It is not cool when the dog pays the price for people who don't care. Most of the time the price dogs have to pay is with their life. You get a dog because of companionship and your willingness to take real good care of your companion.

BEFORE YOU GET A DOG

make sure you have everything the dog will need.
