PET411CARE Basic Cat Care
Love your cat with proper care.

A cat is a long time comment. It is very important to take real good care of your cat. He or she could live up to 15-20 years with the right care. Feline is the proper term for cat. A baby cat is called a kitten. There many different breeds of cats which mean they will have different needs. So do your research first before getting a cat. Some breeds of cats do have medical problems from years of breeding.

Always remember that your veterinarian is your best source of information on your animal’s health care.

FOOD AND WATER:

Cats need proper nutrition and fresh water daily.

Your cat will need fresh clean water everyday. It is also very important to wash the water bowl out because bacteria and algae can grow in a water bowl. Bacteria and algae can lead to health problems which can lead to a huge medical bill. Just by taking the time and providing your cat with a clean bowl of fresh water you will help keep him or her healthy. Water is the most important thing in any animal’s life.

Cats need taurine, which is found naturally in poultry; high in protein diet.

Some cat foods do not have the proper nutrition so it’s important to understand the ingredient that is in cat food. Also it’s better to give your cat hard cat food to keep their digestive system and teeth health. Avoid generic cat food, they have been known to lack in the proper nutrition.

Another helpful tip for nutrition is supplements. Talk to your veterinarian about what are the best supplements for your cat. What works for other animals does not mean it will work for cats.

Please don’t over feed your cat. Over-weight animals have health problems. Feed your cat two small meals a day at regular mealtimes.

On hot days adding ice cubes to the water bowl will help keep your cat cool. Cats control their temperature through their tongue, so cool water can be very helpful. A filtered water fountain is a great way to make sure your pet has fresh water every day, even when your not home.

Buy rustproof dishes and clean them regular. You must clean your cat’s food and water dish on a regular base so that a bacterium does not start growing on them. Place the bowls in a no traffic area. If you have a dog then keep the cat’s food bowls off the floor but easy for the cat to get to. Why do I say this? Because cat food is not good for dogs, it’s like feeding them candy.

DO NOT FEED YOUR CAT:
Moldy or spoiled food
Chocolate
Coffee
Grapes & raisins
Onions, garlic
Yeast dough
*Milk can cause diarrhea.*
.

HOUSING AND BEDDING:

Cats need a place to sleep, it a good idea to have several places for them to sleep.
Cats need a warm, dry and save place to sleep in peace.
There are cat beds, and cat houses, even a box with a towel or blanket will work.
Cats love to sleep in cubby holes and high places.
Please clean their bedding every week.

LITTER BOX:

You will need a litter box.
Cats dig holes when they need to go to the bathroom, then they cover it up when done. Cats love to be clean.

The first three days put your cat in the litter box about four times a day; this will help them to learn where the box is. If they are not litter box trained put them in the litter box every hour or two. Most cats catch on the first or second day. There are some cats that can be a pain about going into the litter box, just keep putting them in the litter box until they get it.

The litter box should be big enough for the cat to move around and fill the litter box haft way.

You must keep the litter box very clean or your cat will decide to go to the bathroom elsewhere. Keep the litter box fresh by scooping it daily and scrubbing the litter box weekly.

WARNING, if you are a pregnant woman, it is very important that you do not go near the litter box. Get some one else to clean the litter box.

VETERINARIAN, VACCINATIONS AND HEALTH:

When you get a new cat take it to the veterinarian to have an examination and to receive his or her vaccination shot. This is also a great time to talk to the veterinarian about proper care and nutrition for your new cat.

Some breeds of cats have sinus problems so talk to your veterinarian about the health problem that your breed of cat might have.

You must take your cat to the veterinarian for regular check-ups and to receive their vaccinations. Kittens will need a series of vaccinations. The booster shot should be given to a kitten twice between the ages of 8-12 weeks. The vaccinations are to help your cat against deceases.

As your petting and scratching your cat check for fleas, ear mites and any bumps or cut. If you have any concerns about what you find please take your cat to the veterinarian.

If your pet is showing any signs of distress or you suspect your pet is seriously ill, CONTACT YOUR VETERINARIAN immediately.

SPAYED OR NEUTERED:

Most cats get put to death because a home can not be found for them. The only way to stop this from happening is to have your cat spayed or neutered. The overpopulation is a very big problem.

Please neuter your male cats, a lot of people feel that because their cat is male they don’t need to bother with getting him fixed. But here is something to think about. Male cats love to mark your home by spray on everything. Your male cat is less likely to spray if he is neutered.

Don’t be apart of the problem.

DANGERS

Never leave your cat alone in the car. Over heating can cause death.

Cats can get hurt or die from falling out of windows.

Safeguard your Household

Cat and Kittens are very curious which can get them into trouble.

Keep dangerous substances locked away, Phenol can cause serious liver damage in cats. Phenol is found in most cleaning products. Companies do use very toxic chemicals in their cleaning products that are highly dangerous to both animals and humans.

Cats will chew on electrical cords

Pick up every little thing, cat have been know to choke or something gets stuck in the intestines.

Cats will chew on plants and there are a lot of plants out there that are toxic to cats. Make sure that your plants are non-toxic to cats.

BATHING AND GROOMING:

It’s very important to groom your cat regular so that their coat stays healthy, soft and shiny. When you groom your cat it will reduce hairballs from forming in their stomach when he or she grooms themselves.

Bathing Your Cat should be once a month or if they have ticks or fleas.
Cats rarely need a bath.

Brush your cat’s teeth everyday to prevent teeth decay. cats do get tarter buildup and cavities. To take good care of your cats teeth brush them. When you take your cat into the veterinarian for a check-up, have them examine his or her teeth. You can even have the vet give your cat’s teeth a good cleaning.

COLLARS:

If you are moving or traveling please use a cat carrier. A carrier helps you to keep track of your pet. There are also leads and harness made for cats.

A collar and ID tag that includes your name, address and phone number will help a lot if your cat get lost.
Check with your local government about the registration laws. Each state has different laws about cats.

Flea collars are a big no no. I was once told by a Veterinarian that the toxic in a flea collar can irritated a cat’s skin or has caused them to be sick.

HOLDING AND HANDLING:

Pick up your cat with one hand under his front legs or under his upper chest and your other hand under his hindquarters (back legs). Hold him or her close to you. Your cat will feel save when you hold them this way. If you pick your cat up by the scruff of the neck or by their legs you could hurt them.

You only grab a cat by the scruff of their neck if you need to pin them down for treatment, shot or to get a better look at a wound. I do grab the scruff of the neck when a cat is being difficult. You do need to be firm but gentle at the same time when hold a cat down on a table or floor to take care of its wound.
A Veterinarian is very willing to show you how to gentle minister to a very stubborn cat.

PLAYTIME AND TOYS:

Playing with your cat or kitten stimulates both mental and physical heath. Toys help a lot with a cat mental and physical well being, the other thing is your cat is less likely to behave badly if they have play-time.
So get out there and play with your cat.

A cat scratches so he can clean the dead tissue from his claws at the same time stretching the joints in his paws. That is why it’s not a good idea to have your cat declaw. It is know that some cats end up with problems in their paws. No, not all cat but most of them do. Please talk to your Veterinarian about declawing.
So that makes a scratching post the number one toy. A scratching post will help a cat take care of its paw while saving your couch.

I put catnip on the scratching post and the cats love it. When I do catch my furry little beast turning my couch into a scratch post I squirt them with water or pick them up and take them over to the scratching post with cat nip on it. It has always worked for me.

As for other toys your guess is as good as mine. Some cat will love one toy and not bother with other toys. I had a cat that never played with any of the toys I got him. All he played with was a plastic soda bottle top.
I do have one warning about toys, cats do put these toys in their mouth so make sure that the toys are not made of some toxic chemicals or too small for your cat to choke on. The same warning about children’s toys should be applied to all your pets.

TRAIN YOUR CAT:

Never physical punish or kick your cat, this will cause a distrust in your cat, plus you are taking a big chance in hurting the cat very badly.

Squirting water or a load noise works great when a cat is misbehaving. Blowing in the face is also another way to get your cat to stop his or her bad behavior.
I use all three methods when training my cats, but there is more to it then water, noise, and blow in faces. You need to let your cats know when they are behaving good by giving them a good scratching or petting them. Treat also help too, but don’t give your cat too many treats or you will end up with a fat that has health problems.

You must be patient with your cat and avoid misbehaver by giving your cat attention and sent a time each day to play with your cat.

If you have a cat that demands attention all the time it is important to only give attention when he or she are behaving properly.

The training does not happen overnight it takes time.

Don’t ever hit your cat. Learn to be patient with your cat.
